Ruth Negga leads Irish interest in this year's Oscar nominations, while La La Land scores 14 nods

G’wan Ruth!

IRISH-ETHIOPIAN ACTRESS Ruth Negga was among the stars to score an Oscar nomination this afternoon.

Negga, who grew up in Co. Limerick, was nominated for her turn in the civil rights drama Loving.

This is Negga’s first Academy Award nomination and marks the second year in a row that Ireland is represented in the Best Actress race.

Negga faces steep competition from Isabelle Huppert, Natalie Portman, Meryl Streep and frontrunner Emma Stone.

And there’s also Irish interest in Best Costume Design. Dublin woman Consolata Boyle was nominated for her work on Florence Foster Jenkins. Boyle has previously worked on films like The Van, Into The West, Angela’s Ashes, Philomena and The Iron Lady.

She was previously Oscar-nominated for her work on The Queen.

Additionally, Irish co-production The Lobster landed a nomination for Best Original Screenplay.

The Lobster, which was produced by Irish film production company Element Pictures and starred Colin Farrell, landed a coveted nod for its writers Yorgos Lanthimos and Efthymis Filippou.

In the main categories, La La Land leads the way with a record-tying 14 nominations, including nods in Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Actor and Best Original Screenplay.

Arrival and Moonlight landed 8 nominations apiece, while Lion and Hacksaw Ridge scored 6 each.

And it looks as though the Academy has sought to remedy last year’s #OscarsSoWhite controversy with seven actors of colour nominated — Denzel Washington, Ruth Negga, Dev Patel, Octavia Spencer, Mahershala Ali, Naomie Harris and Viola Davis.

Additionally, Barry Jenkins becomes just the fourth black director in history to land a Best Director nomination.

Here are the nominations in full.
